Session Brief
Odisha, owing to its vast industrial and manufacturing landscape, the major waste streams which are generated from industries such as, thermal power plants, integrated steel plants, alumina refineries, cement plants, etc, are the economic engines and attract the most investments. These wastes have the potential to be utilised as secondary raw materials through a Symbiotic association, leading to an ecosystem of “Waste to Wealth” in the State. This session will unveil the state’s roadmap for growth, showcasing its competitive advantages, success stories, and investment opportunities in the waste and circular economy sector.
India’s Circular Economy Sector
While the SPCB shall support and facilitate these ancillary units, or circularity modules within units of the State, key Departments of the Government have major roles to play in ensuring an enabling environment for this sector. The Utkarsh Odisha : Make in Odisha Conclave 2025 provides an unique opportunity to reach out to investors working in the Circularity segment, and facilitate their investments into the State.
The waste management sector in India with a market size was valued at approximately USD 13.1 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach
USD 21.7 billion by 2032, reflecting a compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) of 6.5% during the forecast period.
1 The changing consumption patterns, rapid urbanisation, industrialisation and economic growth, necessitates effective waste management solutions which is backed by the right regulatory supports. India presents an opportunity in numerous subsectors of waste management including industrial waste, municipal solid waste, electronic waste, agricultural waste, and others. In summary, India's waste management market is poised for substantial growth, driven by increasing waste generation and the need for sustainable management solutions across various waste categories.
Odisha’s Circular Economy Sector
Odisha generates about 100 million ton of waste per year from different sources. Key industrial sectors of the State like steel, power and fertilizer, contribute to about 85-90% of the waste generation. The remaining 10-15% of the total waste generation are from the urban centers in form of Solid Waste, C&D Waste, E-waste and Plastic Waste, etc. Accelerated Circular Economy principles can pay immense environmental and social dividends by opening opportunities in waste utilization sector, leading to investments and job creation. Some of the compelling factors to invest in Odisha are-
- Odisha also provides a huge scope for the development of waste recycling pertaining to its focus sectors- Flyash, Gypsum, Plastics, Electronics, and Textiles and Port-based infrastructure offers avenues for the import and export of raw material and finished goods.
